Interview with Mackenzie and Riley

Riley:
So, Mackenzie, you’re a matchmaker. What’s the worst date you’ve ever been on?
Oh gosh, where do I start? There’s a list a mile long of my bad dates. It’s hard to define which was the worst! Let’s see, perhaps the guy who was proud of being lazy and wanted to pay for our date (in a nice, classy Burger King no less) in two pence pieces, a bagful of which he dragged along on the date with him! Or maybe the guy who was so rude he got a glass of wine chucked over his head. To be honest, the ones that stand you up are often better than the ones that bother to come.
I hear this all started because you wanted to find a boyfriend for your mother. Why?
Well, my boyfriend and I had just moved into a house of our own, down the road from my mum. The problem with that was my mum thought she had an open invitation to come over every single night, put on her soaps, criticise our décor, and let her yappy little dog pee everywhere! I realised she was only doing it because she was lonely, and thought that maybe if I could find her a man to share her life with, she might give me and my love life some privacy!
What’s the most annoying thing your mother has ever done?
Redecorated my house, definitely. Without my permission, I might add. I went to work one day and came home to find everything different. She’d changed my curtains, my cushions, moved my furniture around, and worst of all, taken my art prints down and replaced them with horrific photos of dressed up cats! Luckily I caught her before she started repainting in some hideous shade of apple-white!
Mackenzie:
So, Riley, you’re dead, huh?
That seems to be the case, yes. I didn’t believe it at first. I found myself standing outside this mysterious grey building with Anthony, the class geek. At first we thought there had been some sort of zombie apocalypse, but then we found the headteacher who’d been dead for sixty years and she explained things. We had both been killed in an accident that my idiot boyfriend caused and now we were at Afterlife Academy, which is a school for teenagers who die before they finish their education. Sounds fun, right? It’s not that bad actually, a lot better than I thought when I first got here. Some of our classes are quite interesting actually, better than normal school. The only bad thing is that maths is still on the schedule – it keeps Anthony happy though!
What’s the weirdest thing about this Afterlife Academy place?
Like you with your bad dates, I don’t know where to start! There’s a demon dinner lady with red horns that get redder when she’s angry, not that she gets angry very often, she’s actually really nice. And my roommate has a vampiric pumpkin as a pet, luckily it can’t move from the desk but you have to be careful not to put your hands near it because it might bite your fingers off. It likes the taste of blood. Seriously, it’s a pumpkin. Other weird things, hmm, everyone and everything is grey and completely
devoid of colour, the teachers seem to know who you are and what you’re thinking before you’ve ever spoken to them, and you can eat whatever you want without putting on weight, that might just be my absolute favourite thing about Afterlife Academy!
What’s the biggest surprise about being dead? I’m sure everyone has their own idea of the what afterlife is like, but what did you absolutely not expect?
To be honest, I’d never put a lot of thought into the afterlife. Like most teenagers, I suppose, I never expected to die. I thought the afterlife was something you only had to start thinking about when you reached the age of ninety. It’s pretty safe to say that the whole thing has been a bit unexpected. That said, the biggest surprise has definitely been Anthony. He’s actually a really nice guy! Who would’ve thought that? Admittedly I never gave him the time of day back at home, but as we came here together we’ve been pretty much stuck with each other, it was talk to him or sit by myself, and I’m really glad I decided to talk to him. I honestly didn’t deserve Anthony to look at me twice after the way I used to treat him, but he was sweet and kind enough to put it behind us and we’re actually really good friends now. In fact, maybe even more than friends…

Finding the perfect man isn't easy. Especially when it's for your mother...
Mothers. Can't live with them, can't live without them, can't live three doors down the road without them interfering in every aspect of your life.
Mackenzie Atkinson's mother has meddled in her love life once too often and something has to be done. Mackenzie decides to turn the tables and find love for her lonely mother.
Her lonely and very fussy mother.
Surely finding an older gentleman looking for love won't be that hard, right?
Wrong.
If you've ever thought that boys grow up, here's the problem: They don't. Ever.
And Mackenzie is about to learn that the hard way.
Faced with a useless boyfriend, dressed up dogs, men who wear welly boots on dates, men who shouldn't be allowed out in public, and men who make reptiles seem like attractive company - will she ever find the perfect man for her neurotic mother?
Afterlife Academy
Even being dead isn’t enough to get you out of maths class.
Dying wasn't on sixteen-year-old Riley Richardson's to-do list. And now, not only is she dead, but she's stuck in a perpetual high school nightmare. Worse still, she's stuck there with the geekiest, most annoying boy in the history of the world, ever.
In a school where the geeks are popular and just about everything is wrong, Riley has become an outcast. She begins a desperate quest to get back home, but her once-perfect life starts to unravel into something not nearly as great as she thought it was. And maybe death isn’t really that bad after all...
Welcome to Afterlife Academy, where horns are the norm, the microwave is more intelligent than the teachers, and the pumpkins have a taste for blood.
Jaimie is a 27-year-old English-sounding Welsh girl with an awkward-to-spell name. She lives in South Wales and enjoys writing, gardening, drinking tea and watching horror movies. She hates spiders and cheese & onion crisps.
She has been writing for years, but has never before plucked up the courage to tell people. She writes mostly chick-lit and young adult. Kismetology is her first novel and there are plenty more on the way!
